Back to Basics - Communication 3

Get a Two Way Radio
You probably played with these as a kid, but two way radios are not just for child's play. These little tools are priceless if you need to communicate within small groups and some have considerable range
Like most things, you get what you pay for, and higher quality equipment means a higher price tag. However, there are some terrific models from 30 to 50 dollars, so these don't have to set you back that much.

Consider getting a version that has both a rechargeable battery pack and that can also run off of standard batteries. Obviously, be sure to always have your set charged and have a back up set of batteries ready.

You should know that no matter what ranges the package claim, terrain makes a big difference in how much of that range you get. Most models will just about always get 1/2 to 2 miles of range, which is decent and could do the trick if you find yourself split from loved ones trying to flee town or navigate through a difficult terrain/situation.

If you are dead set on getting a greater range, you might opt for a 2 channel/2 watt radio. These do cost more, but if you have a few extra dollars to spend, check out these as an option.
