Back to Basics- Communication 1

In any emergency, communication is vital. In wars, soliders must be able to communication with superiors. In a hurricane or other natural disaster, those needing help must be able to communicate with rescuers. So it is a logical first step to think about securing your means of sending and recieving information if things go terribly wrong.

One item you might want to purchase and become familiar with is the shortwave radio. There are many reasons this technology is important. There is literally no place on earth that is incapable of receiving short wave signals because these low frequency waves are reflected by the ionosphere. Weather, sun spots and time of day all affect the distances shortwaves can reach, but under optimal conditions, the results can be staggering.

A good shortwave radio can listen to European broadcasts, Asian Broadcasts, maritime ship communication, pick up Ham(more later on Ham radio), coast weather station informaiton an much more. Prices vary widely, but you can get models starting at about 100. Check out a few models, look at their consumer reviews, and buy one that is dependable. Some shortwave models have a hand crank for use when power is out, which is a great option.
